In Loving Memory of Dr. Gregory

Dr. Gregory Munson was born on June 21,1949 in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated in 1967 from Kirkwood High School in Missouri and in 1971 from Purdue University where he found a second home and lifelong friendships at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. His medical education started at University of Missouri School of Medicine and spanned a surgical internship at Medical College of Wisconsin, surgical residencies at University of Missouri and a spine surgery fellowship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He found a team of doctors who shared his commitment to quality conservative patient care, ethics, and mutual respect at Jewett Orthopedic Clinic in Winter Park Florida in 1982. He was an elected member of their Executive Committee for 27 years from its inception in 1985. He retired from Jewett in July of 2015. He was a talented and compassionate surgeon. He enjoyed many professional organizations, especially the annual camaraderie at the North American Spine Society. Ever since his retirement, Greg was a valued legal expert witness.

Greg is survived by his wife, Jan Taylor, whom he married on May 24, 1975. She was the love of his life – as he is hers. Greg and Jan raised one son, Eric, currently residing in St. Louis. Greg was so proud of Eric and they shared many “boy and his dad” adventures that Eric will never forget. Greg adored his three grandchildren Payton 8, Shea 6, and Max 4. He is survived by his tap dancing, still employed, 93 year old mother Angie, also of St. Louis. Greg was very close to his sister Trudy Munson Burke a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist in New Jersey. They loved spending long hours on the phone laughing often while he was hiking in a park. He admitted that he needed to find a bigger park. He is also survived by 6 loving nieces and nephews. Greg was devoted to his family. Greg was most happy when filling his Cajun grill and Cookshack smoker with meat and seafood for his friends, family and ALL the friends of his friends and family. His generosity was endless. He made a mean smoked duck salad and multiple gourmet specialties to take on fishing trips and to serve at his Men’s Health Nights. One could not be with Greg long before his sense of humor and story telling took over the room.

In the medical field, we often refer to those close to us as family. Truer words couldn’t be spoken about Dr. Gregory Munson. From the very beginning, he was whole-heartedly invested in Jewett Orthopaedic. He was instrumental in bringing Jewett’s Spine team to the next level of innovation & national recognition.  He became ingrained into our rich history of excellence & leadership in spinal care.  For the past 35 years if you couldn’t find him filling our hallways with laughter and wisdom, he was with his family or pursuing his passion of hunting & fishing.  Though he ventured to retirement, he still held a special spot at Jewett, making his rounds, mentoring, & brightening each one of our days. We cannot begin to express the great sorrow our family feels today as we’ve lost him way too soon. Dr. Munson, you’ll never be forgotten and will always be loved by your Jewett Family.
